Access Africa

Planning a holiday can be stressful, but planning a holiday when you have a disability is always challenging to say the least. Having this in mind, a friend of mine -who enjoys travelling but has experienced many frustrations in doing so because he has a spinal injury- created Access Africa to offer wheelchair accessible holidays in comfort for the adventurous disabled traveller who wishes to experience South Africa.

Access Africa was established based on the personal experiences of a spinal injury traveller so  they include facilities and services which benefit from first hand experience of the demands and frustrations when travelling with a disability abroad. Access Africa can tailor your holidays according to your personal needs. Equipment aids such as shower chairs and mobile hoists are provided on request at no extra charge because their policy is based on equal opportunities and they don't expect a disabled person to pay more because they require extra facilities.

Accommodation

Your will stay at the private and exclusive Ekuthuleni lodge which is situated 20 min from Durban International Airport on the scenic Kwazulu Natal south coast known as the " Garden Province " of South Africa.

The accommodation at Ekutheleni Lodge is set amidst indigenous gardens and has majestic ocean views. The chalets –serviced daily- blend into a luxurious setting of Acacias, Mango trees and local flowers and the rustic thatch roofs merge tastefully into the natural surroundings. Each chalet can accommodate 6 guests. For comfort the chalets benefit from custom made doorways to provide easy access to wheelchairs. All units have flush floor showers.

After being referred, by my optician, in December 2009 I have already undergone cataract surgery on both eyes and it is only 4th May 2010, at time of writing. Princessa - Your friend's Access America should do very well because unfortunately, there is a very large subset of people with disabilities. But many who are able to travel will surely benefit from his recommendations.

drbj: Like my friend experienced it, it can be very difficult for people with disabilities to find suitable holiday packages.

H P Roychoudhury: It is good to have several options open.

Harlan Lewin: Thanks Harlan, I am hoping that this information reaches those who are needing it.

Patty: Thanks for the thumbs up and your support.

Juliette: thanks for your support. Everyone should have the same opportunities when travelling.

Sandyspider: Hoping that it reaches those who need it.

Pamela: It does allow people with disabilities to enjoy an adventure holiday. Like you say, there are too many people with disabilities who are obliged to stay at home because the lack of infrastructure anywhere else. Access africa makes it possible for them to enjoy a normal holiday, and adventure trip and for most people a one time in a life experience.

This is great. While I am not in a wheelchair, I have mobility problems and it's good to know there are holiday services that offer alternatives.
