Protective Swimwear for children

Babies and children have very delicate skin and special care should be taken when they are exposed to the sun. In some areas of the world, this is no problem, but for families who live in very hot places or like travelling to sunny spots this is a very important issue.
My children were born in Southern Spain, where the thermometers easily reach 40°C + during the summer. The sun in that part of the world is strong and blinding so one must be very careful with young children’s skin. In fact most Spaniards in the area only take their babies out for a walk along the seaside after 8 at night, midnight being the preferred strolling time during July and August!

Of course I could not stay at home all day with the children so I tried most sunscreens on the market, soon to find that young children just rub it off, sometimes dangerously near their eyes. Fortunately enough on one of my shopping trips I found the perfect solution UV protected swimwear for babies. I was a bit incredulous at the start but after a few tries I was absolutely convinced of how effective they were. I bought several pairs, in different sizes and colours for both my boy and girl. It was great; the sun suits paired up with UV protected sun hats were perfect to allow us to stay all day at the pool or the beach without any signs of skin damage.
It has been a few years now since the first time we tried out our first UV swimwear and I can honestly say that my children have never been sunburnt, not even in the hottest and brightest of summers. We have spent whole days on the beach or at the pools and even walking under the Californian sun and never had any problems with over exposure to the sun.

Why choose UV protective swimwear for children:

- Protective swimwear is made from UPF 50+ rated fabric which means that your child is safer than wearing a dry t-shirt which only offers a maximum UPF8 when dry and as little as UPF2 when wet.

Tips when buying protective swimwear for kids
- Make sure the swimwear is made of UPF 50+ rated fabric -which means that it will block around 97.5% of UV rays.
- Buy a size bigger so you have greater coverage on arms and legs.
- For babies you can get the two piece swim suits so it is easy for nappy changing, or you can buy the ones with a crotch opening.
Taking care of your UV swimwear:
To avoid damaging the fabric and its protection, follow carefully the washing instructions. Mine lasted a long time as I always washed it after every use under cold running water (never put it in the washing machine). Also it is best if you just let it dry in a shaded place rather than under strong sun. Never use the tumble drier for your swimwear.

Yes, please DO share the information. It is very important to protect a child’s skin from the sun. Amazingly enough every summer we still see sunburnt children, because the parents forgot to properly apply sunscreens or because the sunscreen used was not appropriate for the protection required.
UV blocking shirts are great. My oldest son has red hair, tons of freckles and very pale skin. I do my best to cover him in sunscreen and always somehow miss spots and don't see them until I get him home and my wife gives me an earful. My other kids and I can adapt over time and get used to the sun for a longer exposure. But, we still need some sun block. My two oldest sons have been wearing these shirts at the pool and beach for many years and they have been a lifesaver for me. Especially when paired with sunglasses a hat and sunblock in every spot of bare skin.

These types of products are great for children. Sublock can easily be rubbed off or just naturally wears off after a couple hours and it's easy to forget to reapply it to your kids. Thank you for getting this information out there to other parents.
Sunscreen lotions contains chemicals which can be very harmful if it is rubbed near to eyes or taken in mouth. I will also advice all parents to use best protective UV swimwear. Even during summers and high heat day we should keep our child covered so that his/her skin is protected from harmful UV rays
AS a fair skinned adult I wear longsleeved top as well - I can take it off inside (as its hot in Australia's summer) - but I only just stopped wearing it to the beach (April the UV index finally dropped down). The evidence is that later life skin cancer is all about the sun exposure that young children get - paritcularly under 7 - I get really mad when I see parents on the beach allowing their kids to get burnt - its so stupid! Suntan lotions are fine -- but a pain and as an adult I find it much quicker just to put another layer on. You can get matching hats in Australia too - which look cute and go in the water - nothing worse than a sunburnt scalp!

Lissie: It makes me mad too when I see sunburnt children. It is amazing how some people make the same mistake year after year! Nowadays there is not excuse to be sunburnt, there are so many products and information about the harmful effects of the sun that it is a complete irresponsability to be or to let your child be sunburnt!

Great advice! These nano fabrics aren't just for children, everyone who lives in a sun prone climate ought to be paying more attention to wearing clothing made of such fabrics. Dress your children in them and dres yourself when outdoors in them.

Sun protection is so important and many parents don't know that those UV rays can cause skin cancer later on. That's why I think protective clothing and sun hats are a must-have!

Hi, A Grandparent has washed my son's UV suit and then tumble dried it thinking they were being helpful. Does anyone know whether this will have significantly damaged the UV protection and SPF factor?

Good advice Princessa. We easily go over Spain's temperatures here in Southern California, and sometime I am bad and forget to put on sunscreen. You remind me even adults should wear hats, but kids should be covered up as you suggest.
