Nagano City is the capital of the Nagano Prefecture in the Honshu island of Japan. Around a million tourists visit Nagano annually as the city is famous for its temples, its hot springs and for hosting the 1998 Olympic Winter Games.

You can find very good quality Cheap accommodation in Nagano and surrounding villages. From here you can visit some of Japan’s most beautiful and ancient temples, relax in one of Nagano’s hot springs, enjoy the culinary specialities and explore some of the numerous National Parks in the area.

Places to see in Nagano

  • Zenkoji Temple. This is Nagano’s most famous attraction and also one of the most popular temples in Japan.
  • The 1998 Olympic Winter games venues, the most popular one is the M-Wave which houses the Nagano Olympic Museum.
  • Hachimanbara, once a battlefield it is now a public park.
  • The Nagano City Museum.
  • The Nagano Chausuyama Zoo
  • Shinano Art Museum where you can find masterpieces related to Nagano.
  • Kitano Museum of Art

  • The Academic CastleTown: Shinshu Matsushiro built from a 100,000 stones. Home to the samurai residences, and the Old School for Literary and Military Arts founded in 1855.
  • Nagano hot Springs, two of the most popular ones are Yudanaka and Shibu.
  • Lizuna village, famous for its Olympic ski resort.
  • Chubu-Sangaku National Park with some of its mountains over 3,000m, including Mt. Hakuba, Mt. Tateyama, Mt. Yari and Mt. Hotaka.
  • Joshinetsu Kogen National Park is famous for its wildlife home to endemic species such as Japanese serows and Japanese Macaques, it is also a natural habitat for the deer, red fox and the endangered Asiatic black bear.
  • Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park with eight peaks over 2000 m scattered over 1250 km².  The major point of interest is the Chikuma River.
