In some places Easter gifts are a norm and Easter baskets are a fun tradition to follow, you can make your own or you can buy them ready made. Nowadays you can even buy them online and have them shipped across the country with no extra hassle.

Sugar Free Easter

But if you are concerned about your children having too many sweet treats during Easter, or if you want to offer a gift to someone who cannot eat sugar, some companies offer Sugar Free Easter baskets. You still get all the treats like jelly beans and chocolate bunnies but Sugar Free.

Easter Basket Filled with Sugar Free Easter Treats!

Easter Basket Filled with Sugar Free Easter Treats

Another solution to avoid a “sugar overload” is making your own basket.  For children you don’t need to fill their baskets to the brim with sweets.  Other basket fillers which they will appreciate are colouring books and pens, stickers, soft toys (bunnies), Easter DVDs and Easter books.  Just keep it simple, do not fill the basket with expensive presents.  Remember that this is just a token of love, not Christmas!

Children making Easter baskets for their friends:

If you want to involve your children in the Easter preparations you can ask them to help you make Easter baskets for their grandparents and friends.

If you are really brave, you can even invite some of your children’s friends and put everybody to work!  Children will love making Cupcakes to fill their baskets.  Personally I am a terrible baker and I would not torture anyone with my cakes so to make things easier I buy ready made cupcakes (magdalenas here) and just ask the children and their friends to help decorate them.  This ends up in quite a fun afternoon as they make a party of decorating the cakes with icing, m&ms and other candies.

Once the cakes are ready you can put them in a box (also made and decorated by the children) so their friends can take some home.  This makes an original and cheap gift for your child’s friends and their families.

Another option is to take the children for a walk in the woods and gather basket fillers.  You can gather little tree branches, grass, leaves and flowers which they will use to make a soft filler in their baskets.  Over that you will need to put ready wrapped chocolate and candy.  Add a few colourful bows to finish up and you will have fantastic little Easter baskets.

To make your own gift baskets:

Make your kids feel extra special making a personalized Easter basket with their favourite treats and toys. Put fun items in it. You do not need to fill an Easter basket with chocolate and candy. Some items you can add to make your gift basket unique are:

  • Stuffed animals: rabbits are the most popular options. Keep the toy small and cute. If your child is old enough you might want to use collectible toys.
  • For older children and adults you can use baskets that serve a double purpose or replace them by crates that can be used as plant holders, boxes that can serve as make up holders, shopping bags, dvd holders and so on.
  • To fill a child’s Easter basket you can use colouring books or colouring pages downloaded from the internet, stickers, books related to Easter and Easter DVDs.
  • For girls, lipsticks, lips gloss, glitter tattoos and spring hair bands are good basket fillers.
  • For adults, plants and spring flowers are good basket fillers.
  • An original basket filler for adults can be exotic fruits.
  • Fill the bottom of the basket with shred to add body to the basket. Use a colourful shred, you can make your own with paper or plastic. For an original shred you can also use other materials such as small tree branches, flower petals, real grass or leaves, artificial grass, bubble bath balls, use your imagination! .
  • Do not forget the finishing touches like green and yellow ribbons to add to the festive mood.

It's funny but as I was reading this hub I have come to realize that we have never given any gifts during Easter. We attend mass and celebrate by going out but never ever gave gifts! :-) This gave me an idea. Thanks!

Cute ideas!  What I did this year was took a more practical approach.  I picked out a character that my son likes and filled up the basket with useful items with the character on it.  For example my son loves Spongebob.  So I found toothpaste toothbrush, bandaids and bubble bath all with Spongebob on it.  I know it will get used and my son will enjoy it! I also included a DVD and a Spongebob game. and Of course I included gummie crabby patties too!
