Christmas markets in France
60One of the things I love about rural France is its Christmas spirit. Here Christmas takes the slow road and the shops start to decorate for the Christmas season at the start of December. Nothing seems to change too much, life is still calm and we don’t see the pressure to buy buy buy that you see in big cities or in other countries where Christmas has become a marketing aid to force people to buy as much as they can to please their friends and family.
Here in rural France, I am thankful to see that Christmas is still greatly attached to its original meaning. Christmas is seen more as an occasion to reunite the families, and an occasion to spend time together doing what the French do best: cooking, eating and drinking.
Christmas in the Village
Our little village is limited in the amount of Christmas decorations placed by the council. However, we have a merry go round in our little main square along with a big Christmas tree. For the children there are different types of animation provided, there is the horse and cart carriage, the pony rides and the handcrafts workshops run by the council during the weekends.

The Salon the Chocolate
The Christmas spirit arrived at our village a couple of weeks ago with the Salon de Chocolate. A festival destined to show off the best chocolatiers of the year. It was a complete success; entire families visited the salon de Chocolate which opened for only two days. Everybody went with their check book prepared to spend at least 6 euros for 100gr of chocolate to delight themselves and their families on Christmas’ eve. I couldn’t believe people were making cheques for hundreds of euros for their chocolates. We tried the most delicious chocolates you can imagine and even watched an educational film showing how chocolate is made. The film took as back to the cacao fields in Venezuela to end in the best French Chocolate making houses. It was a great way to show my little ones how the chocolate starts as a humble seed and ends up in delicious creams to spread over their crepes, in hot beverages and yummy chocolate shapes that they take delight in consuming. The attendance at the Salon the Chocolate was so busy that there were dozens of people that never managed to get through the doors.

In most places, Christmas shopping is done with weeks in advance at major supermarkets. In France however, the people takes pride in buying the fresher produces for their festive tables. For this they go to...
Chateau de Chabenet
- French Castles: Chabenet
A restored mediaeval castle in the heart of France, the chateau de Chabenet is the most beautiful castle I have seen in the area. As soon as you cross the entry gates you feel transported to a fairy tale...
The 2009 Christmas market at the Chateau de Chabenet.
This is one of my favourite markets. Usually the Chateau is closed to the public so the only opportunity we have to go in is when they have special events like the Hunting festival or the Christmas market. The Castle resembles a fairy tale castle –who needs Disney with this castle round the corner?
The Christmas market was even better than last’s years. There were exhibitors from all around the region bringing their chocolates, crafts, wines, organic soaps, wood crafts, freshly picked roasted chestnuts and hot mulled wine. For the children there was a crafts workshop and a Christmas theatre play. The children loved it, mind you who wouldn’t love listening to a Christmas witch telling a Christmas story with life size characters in a fairy tale castle? My children were over the moon with the play and the surroundings. Simple things that make a big difference.

Christmas around the World:
- Celebrating Christmas in a Foreign Land
In my whole life (so far, all 34 years of it), I have spent just one Christmas in another country. That was in the last quarter of 2004. I was one of the lucky ones chosen by my former employer to send to California, U. S. A. for a three-month... - 2 years ago
- Celebrating Christmas With An Abusive Partner
Although Christmas is perceived to be a time of peace and happiness for families, stress, debt and alcohol levels can create an unhappy alliance. Over the holiday period cracks may appear in family relationships particularly for individuals not used to spending a lot of time together. - 2 years ago
- White Christmas - A Carol that Evokes Fond Visions of Christmas and Snow Everywhere
Having grown up in upstate New York, I have always believed that Christmas and snow go together. Not that Rochester, New York, my hometown, is known for white Christmases. Cold and overcast is common with a little better than a fifty-fifty chance... - 2 years ago

Love all the pictures! Thanks for sharing this hub on Christmas in France. I'm always interested in seeing how holidays are celebrated in other countries. Thanks again for sharing all those beautiful pictures.
Send me some chocolate, please,
Keep on hubbing!
Very nice. I was actually carried away with the pictures. Thanks for sharing.
What a lovely way to spend the holiday. Thank you for this glimpse inside your world.
Sounds brilliant, so what have we decided to do. Go to Germany for Christmas (albeit for a very good reason). We live in rural France as well and the towns nearby look lovely with their Christmas lights. When I get a chance I will be off to take some photographs and they will be going on the web one way or another. Maybe we will get a few in Germany as well, they also have lovely Christmas celebrations.
This is how it's supposed to be. Too bad we allowed things to spiral out of control here in the US. What would be nicer high quality edibles shared with good friends and family - and not buying a bunch of toxic toys and junk?
Lovely hub!
Yes, a lovely castle and sympa account of the market. The one at Monbeliard, near where we lived until recently, has Ireland as its major theme. More of a German feel, which is not surprising, given the history of Le Pays. Looked up your entry on the castle, and look forward to reading your other hubs on France. Joyeux Noel.
Our city now has belgian and french markets which are different for us
Yummm - a tantalising round up close to your home. I could almost smell that rich chocolate and my taste buds are alive! Wonderful hub Princessa.
We're visiting France for a few days over New Year. Your hub reminds me why I enjoy trips to France so much!
French chocolate for Christmas would be a delightful gift. Thanks for the fun hub, great pictures, and I love your avatar too!
Well, at least even for a short while, I had a glimpse of your Christmas tradition in rural France. And I really appreciate your regard for the original meaning of Christmas, a time for family reunions. Merry Christmas!
A great way to spend Christmas holiday and very interesting hub. Jessicab from hubpages.
Woowwwww!!! I love chocolates! I'm almost crying here from all those pictures and from envy :). Wish there's some way for me to get my hands on some of those chocolates you showed in your pics. Love this hub Princessa.
This sounds beautiful. I hate the fact that Christmas is so hectic. It seems that we miss out on so much. I want to be in France for Christmas now.
Thank you.
very nice Princessa,
I came here to greet you "Maligayang Pasko to you and your loved ones", thanks to your greetings in the forum, and it has been a good year...
I am thankful for the effort you put in the HUBMOB,and thanks for the opportunity of knowing you at HP, Best, Maita
How lovely. I am in rural France at the moment. Lots of beautiful villages made even more picturesque by delicate twinkling lights. Add to that some snow and some dramatic mountains, and it has been the perfect Christmas. Market day tomorrow - not the Christmas market, just the usual wonderful fruit and vegetables and local specialities. Happy New Year to all and thanks for a wonderful hub.
nice information. thanks for share. those are wonderful Christmas.
Wow, amidst the hustle and bustle of the Holiday Season, I missed this hub. But, oh what a wonderful hub; I felt as though I was there in France with all the great pictures and my mouth is watering at the idea of experiencing all the wonderful chocolate. Thanks so much for providing such a unique glimpse into your world during the holidays. :)
So beautiful and interesting! Takes me back to a happier, simpler time. Rated up! Merry Christmas!

The five years I lived abroad, Christmas Day in that country was just another working day...
I've not been to a French Christmas market, but some years ago was in York in summer when they had a French market. My main memory is buying the most divine cherries and apricots, which apparently had been picked just before the farmer set off for York. The two us bought a kilo of each fruit, sat on the grass in the park and ate the lot!
